Landscaping: Black Walnut is a large deciduous tree. In landscape plantings, it provides shade and fall color. It is important to know that many other types of plants will not grow under Black Walnut trees due to chemicals called juglones that they release in the soil. Mature trees produce large edible nuts. When planting, choose the location wisely because the trees are difficult to transplant due to its deep taproot.
Wildlife: Squirrels enjoy eating the walnuts.  It is the preferred host of the luna moth.
Economic: Black Walnut is prized for its hardwood being used in furniture. These trees are also grown for their edible nuts.  The husks are used to make a blackish dye.
